16518 - Aeolic Windmills
N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias
If someone dared to name the traditional windmills aeolic, many would find it ridiculous. The same applies regarding an aeolic sailing boat.
The most weird thing is that, both use renewable energy for centuries on, yet nobody really interprets them in that way, because they are used to seeing tradition as something aged which is not suitable to innovative names which don’t necessarily hide a specific innovation.
The reason for this approach is multiple. Many of us see the windmills of Greece as remnants of a bygone era that has passed. Others see only potential ruins. There are of course some nostalgic few that see them with sympathy.
In recent years, some even regard them tourist attractions.
But in actual fact they don’t want them in a functioning phase. Practically they want them dead.
The most incredible is that the windmills could easily, with some modifications that are not at all costly to be converted to small wind turbines and supply the locals with the produce.
In this manner the natural beauty of a windmill which even offers tourist interest would also have a single use. The issue is not the performance but the living existence and not an artificial passivity which is not appropriate to the purpose of the windmill, which by definition is still, in motion, therefore the dynamics of still structures .
By the production of electricity within the urban environment, we have a rational solution that combines the requirements of the people to live and to enjoy life.
It is therefore important to realize that, especially in the islands, the windmills can play a vital role and we don’t need to dismantle them everywhere so that we can later look at old photos with a nostalgia for the past.
Their positions due to knowledge, is always at strategic points which we can easily utilize and promote the positives of the region.
It’s enough to imagine a windmill at night that is lit up by his own energy, so that you would want to go to see it and photograph it.
