18633 - The restoration of the history of the Church of St. George in Kyrenia

Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias

When we were told by the former Mayor of Kyrenia that there was a woman who held the key to St. George’s Church in Kyrenia, we’ve decided with Kyriakos Pattihis and Anna Xynisteri to go and find her.
So, that occurred in 2003 (see Opus 510) when we found Angeliki, and since then we held a relationship with her until her death, (September 2013).
So thereon, every time we could, we met up with her, in the Occupied territories as she continued to protect our Church.
When we asked her what where her needs, the first thing she told us was to get the candles that she kept since 1974, to melt them and return them back to her. So we loaded them in sacks in Anna’s car.
Then, with Andrea Loizia, we agreed that we had to restore the roof, as it was dripping water and green fungus appeared on the walls in the corner that came in contact with the top part of the temple.
Then we went to see the metropolitan bishop of Kyrenia Paul, who allowed us to do the restoration, as the 8000 Cyprus pounds needed, would be donated equally by Nasos Ktorides and Kyriakos Pattichis. That’s how the work was done, with the support of Angeliki and her husband.
Andreas Loizias also undertook to spray the roof with pesticides, because plants with large roots had germinated, and which could not be removed, as that would create dangerous openings.
It’s proper, for all those people who helped, and some of them died, namely, the former mayor and the former Metropolitan bishop, to be referred to, so as not to forget them again, as it’s the usual practice by the indifferent ones.
Because with such tasks, it was not only the restoration that took place, but also the enhancement of our strenghts, which began to realize that we can liberate our homeland if we were to follow a rational strategy.
