23868 - Cypriot Zohr with change of hydrocarbons’ game in the Eastern Mediterranean

Translated from the Greek by Vicky Baklessi
After the failures of the two drillings of Onasagora and Amathousa in Cyprus’s offshore block 9 by ENI, most Greek and Cypriot scientists began mourning saying that Aphrodite would be the last Cypriot field due to the usual defeatism. But in hydrocarbons exploration and production nobody can ever make reference to anything with certainty and especially to negative outcomes. So just 6 months ago all these were overturned with the discovery of the supergiant natural gas field Zohr at the boundaries of the EEZs of Cyprus and Egypt but at the same time of a giant target field of type Zohr entirely within the offshore block 11 of the Cypriot EEZ.
More significantly though, even from the discovery of Zohr, is the change of the exploration game in the major area of Cyprus-Greece. This new energy game does not only refer to pyrolytic psammite fields of natural gas but also to karstified limestone biogenic gas fields. In our previous presentations in international Conferences but also in our publications; we had made mentioned that the karstified target fields of natural gas were created during the Miocene period located in borders of paleolagoon (see Img 1).
From a first analysis on our part of recent geophysical elements of the Geophysical Seismic Data Company, Spectrum, which took place around Eratosthenes, it appears that the new Cypriot target is not unique, neither solitary.
Besides the recent target type Zohr which was recorded in the offshore field 11 adjacent to the Egyptian field Zohr, company Spectrum data demonstrate furthermore the presence of 4 additional targets of supergiant fields (see Img 2) in the southern part of Eratosthenes. We should also add that the source of fields Zohr is not Eratosthenes, as it was sais hastily by some non-specialists of the field, but the paleolagoons which were around Eratosthenes and others in the wider area.
Taking into account the above and based on the new exploration targeting game of giant karstified limestones in Eastern Mediterranean we completed the map of the expected reserves of Natural Gas in the Eastern Mediterranean. (see Img 3).
Based on the new exploration data, the offshore areas South of Crete could contain at least 100 Trillion cubic feet of natural gas. It is obvious that the exploration of new fields so much in Cyprus as in Greece are just beginning and will last for 30 to 40 years. Therefore those who mention that that there is no future because the prices are low today they are simply being irrational.
