To really understand how innovative the Fifth Modernization was,
it’s important to have in mind The Four Modernizations.
Agriculture.
Defense
Industry.
Science and Technology.
They were adopted after Mao’s death.
But nobody thought that Democracy should
be added to the first.
Nobody except Wei Jingsheng.
He was involved in the Chinese democracy movement.
The Fifth Modernization is in fact the title
of this essay.
For that he spent more than 18 years
in various Chinese prisons.
At the end, he was deported to the US
by the government of the dictatorship of the proletariat
after the special request of President Clinton.
But he never stopped fighting for the democracy,
without any fear.
Even for the COVID-19, he tried to warn
American authorities. But at that time, nobody
could believe that a government of a country
could cover up a virus to protect its ideology.
