30968 - USA and Armenian struggle

N. Lygeros

At the International Court of Justice, we can find in Pleadings, oral Arguments, Documents, the Reservations to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Advisory opinion of May 28th 1951) and especially the written statement of the Government of American States (14 XII 50). In their statement the USA at their first paragraph, The Genocide Convention, use the following sentences: “The practice of genocide has occurred throughout human history. The Roman persecution of the Christians, the Turkish massacres of Armenians, the extermination of millions of Jews and Poles by the Nazis are outstanding examples of the crime of genocide.” In all the document of the ICJ, there is only this mention about the Turkish massacres of Armenians. That’s why it’s so important as a detail in this text. It proves that even the Government of Harry Truman has chosen to follow the examples of Raphael Lemkin. This means that the mentation of the USA even at this level is correct. So the propaganda that we hear about this subject from the barbarity is useless. The truth is written already from 1951.
