24124 - The Abel Prize
N. Lygeros
The Abel Prize
to Sir Andrew Wiles
for his stunning proof
of Fermat’s Last Theorem
is not only a recompense
but also a recognition
of the justice
of Mathematics
because after
his tour de force
he managed
with an amazing try
to use results
of elliptic curves,
modular forms
and Galois representation
to prove the conjecture
of Shimura, Taniyama,
and Weil
with the tools of Serre,
Fray and Ribet
in the semistable case
with his modularity lifting technique
and the help of Taylor,
but the committee
of the Fields Medal
fund him too old
to get this prize.
