20107 - When the performance begins
N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias
When the performance begins, it is that the rehearsals have finished.
Whatever you may say afterwards it’s too late, since it can’t be corrected on stage.
It is therefore important what you did during rehearsals, and whether that preparation is compatible and has a relevance to the role you will play next.
Because during rehearsals, as it’s all amongst us, you can say whatever you like.
While, during the performance, you can only support the scenario and nothing else.
Consequently, you must be ready to cope with the pressures of the public which wants to know the truth through the theater, and which is not interested in what goes on backstage.
They want to hear nice speech and observe beautiful movements which fulfill their needs.
They don’t want lies though, and they will be still here after the performance, when all the lights would’ve gone out, and your only companion will be the black of the stage.
Because, depending on what you produced, they will or will not come to see you in your dressing room, in order to see the man who stole the performance with his words and the interpretation of the role.
Therefore, if you are consistent in regards to your troupe, then you have to pay attention to the other actors as well, because the theater isn’t a one man show.
Your responsibilities are not just personal, since they represent a total which became a group, which in turn was transformed with the director, into a theater company able to innovate during the performance.
There are no afterward tricks, and for the duration performance, you must withstand all the mistakes that you had not anticipated.
For this reason, don’t forget the whole context, in order to appear without imperfections.
