55376 - The bombardment of the Armenian church

N. Lygeros
Translated from the Greek by Athina Kehagias

If we were in need of a new proof regarding Azerbaijan’s barbarism, we have it now, that it chose to bomb the historic and symbolic Church of the Savior in the city of Sushi, which is located upon a hill near the capital Stepanakert.
Because we had the joy and honour of visiting this church, we consider it important that it would become common knowledge, that it is isolated even from the homes and from any military target as well.
This in actual fact means, that the Azeris specifically targeted the church.
That is why it is about an act of barbarism and not merely a military move.
The same church was abandoned back in 1920, due to the massacres of the Soviet period.
It was later used as a grain storage space, thereafter, as a workshop, but even as an armoury, during the war from 1989 to 1992.
Consequently, when it was liberated by the Armenians, its roof was rebuilt and angels were placed back in the famous campanile.
In other words, this Azeri act of barbarism was not merely accidental, but it was however in vain, as we are going to repair it, so as to make it beautiful again.
As barbaric as the attack may be, the more humane our action will be.
